A Captivating Conversation with Christopher Krief
Today, I had the pleasure of sitting down for a friendly conversation with Christopher Krief, the owner of CK Architecture. Over a cup of coffee, we delved into the intriguing world of architecture, discussing the differences between France and Ireland, CK Architecture's approach to BIM, and their exciting foray into new technology.

When asked about the disparities in architecture between France and Ireland, Christopher shared his insights. "Lots of differences between architecture in France and in Ireland," he remarked. "In fact, except for the sketches and artistic parts, each country has its own regulations, construction standards, planning legislations, and so on." It's fascinating to see how regional factors shape the architectural landscape, creating unique styles and approaches.
As our conversation progressed, Christopher shed light on CK Architecture's involvement in the Building Information Modeling (BIM) process. I asked him about their use of Revit, a popular BIM software. He chuckled and said, "Good question... Level 1 probably, working towards level 2... We are a small practice, working on small projects." It's refreshing to see a candid acknowledgment of their current position and aspirations.
Christopher went on to explain that one aspect of reaching level 2 in BIM is using real coordinates and orientation for projects. CK Architecture implements this practice for natural light and shadow studies. "We do that for shadow studies too," he added with a smile. While not claiming expertise in all BIM levels, Christopher highlighted their commitment to leveraging technology effectively.
Curiosity piqued, I asked Christopher if they used AutoCAD for coordination purposes. He clarified, "Total station is for land survey... we do not provide this service." CK Architecture's focus lies primarily in design and restoration. However, they expressed excitement about an upcoming training session on using the Pro 2 Matterport 3D camera. Christopher explained their intention to test this technology for the restoration of a protected structure. "The 3D model can be exported to Revit," he revealed, underlining the potential benefits of this innovative tool.
During our chat, Christopher also shared his memberships in the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists and Chartered Association of Building Engineers. These affiliations highlight his dedication to professional development and staying at the forefront of industry knowledge.
As we concluded our conversation, it was evident that CK Architecture's approach combines traditional artistic elements with a willingness to explore emerging technologies. Christopher and his team are keen on pushing boundaries and delivering exceptional architectural solutions, regardless of the project's scale.
In a world where regulations and construction standards vary between countries, CK Architecture's adaptability shines through. Their willingness to embrace tools like Revit and explore the potential of the Matterport 3D camera showcases a forward-thinking mindset.
Christopher Krief, the visionary behind CK Architecture, embodies a passion for architecture that is both inspiring and infectious. With his extensive experience and commitment to professional organizations, he serves as a beacon for aspiring architects and industry professionals.
CK Architecture's journey is a testament to the ever-evolving nature of the architectural field. By combining artistic vision, technological advancements, and a commitment to excellence, Christopher and his team are shaping the architectural landscape, one project at a time.
In the years to come, CK Architecture is set to make its mark, demonstrating that innovation and creativity know no bounds. As we bid farewell, we eagerly anticipate the next chapter in their architectural endeavors, eager to witness the awe-inspiring spaces they will create.
